Nusra Qureshi Trained in traditional minature painting at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, Nusra fuses a traditional style and modern motifs within her work. What at first appears to be a deceptively simple narrative, upon close examination becomes a commentary on the issues of sexual politics and the impact of 19th Century Colonialism.
Nusra Spent three and a half hard hitting days with us at Landfall press and produced, in collaboration with the staff, two multi-color lithographs entitled Gardens of Delight and Three Songs of Devotion. Both prints are based on traditional Pahlari School paintings of lovers, but are executed with Nusra's own subtle twist. Her narratives reverse the balance of perceived male dominance by marrying images of early Colonialism with those of male/female intimacy. Through her adept brushwork and layered meanings, Qureshi's reinterpretations provide and active voice for an otherwise passive historical feminine role.
